It opened in 1917, 16 years after the opening of the oldest Moana Hotel in Waikiki in 1917, before the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
It's not the oldest island on the Big Island, as the Volcano House, which is said to be the oldest in Hawaii, already existed, but since then it has been in business for over 100 years.
Positioned more like a business hotel than a resort hotel, 18 years ago when I first stayed there was no telephone or TV in the room. There was Wi-Fi when I stayed for the first time in 2 years, but it's a place like a cultural heritage where you can feel the Hawaii of yesteryear with the simple wooden structure.
