この曲は、19世紀以降の小アジアで発祥と言われていますが、詳細は明らかにされていません。

長い歴史をへて、ジャズや近代音楽に採り入れられながら、エキゾチック曲のスタンダードとなりました。

 全米では2位を記録した有名曲ですが、1967年という時代なので最近はあまり聴かなくなりました。

ジュディス・ダーハム（女性）をメインボーカルにした男性3人女性1人のボーカルグループで数多くのヒットを持ちます。

この曲は車のCMで聴いたという人も多いと思いますが、実は70年代前期に公営競技の案内放送のバックでかかっていました。

リッチー・ヴァレンスは、1950年後半に大ブームを巻き起こしたロックンロールのスターの一人でしたが、コンサート地に向かうチャーター機は墜落し、彼はわずか17歳でこの世を去りました。
